Onset of winter in Germany: "Stormy amounts" of fresh snow and ice expected

Winter 2021/2022 is almost over. There was hardly anything to see of the snow. That is now changing dramatically. In parts of Germany it can get uncomfortable at the weekend.

Update from January 22, 9:20 a.m .: In most parts of Germany, the weather calmed down again on Saturday, snowfall and gusts of wind subsided. For the south of Bavaria, however, there is a storm warning, the German Weather Service (DWD) predicts heavy snowfall* in the Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden Alps in particular. There should be 20 to 40 centimeters of fresh snow by Sunday morning, and even up to 60 centimeters in traffic jams – “stormy amounts”, as the DWD describes it.

The onset of winter is also to be expected in eastern Bavaria up to the Ore Mountains, where the snowfall limit is 400 meters. In the entire south of Germany and thus also in Baden-Württemberg, there is a risk of black ice due to the slush and the freezing temperatures. Warning level 1 applies. Storm gusts in the Bavarian Forest, Ore Mountains and in the highlands of the Alps should also make for a very uncomfortable Saturday.

Weather expert sees lightning winter coming: “Icy polar air thunders over Germany”

First report from January 20th:

Munich – So far, the winter in Germany has hardly been seen. The weather* mostly cloudy and cold and wet. No sign of snow. The sun is rare. But when a cold front crosses, temperatures plummet. Snow* and sleet, sleet thunderstorms but also stormy winds are the order of the day.

Weather in Germany: 48-hour lightning winter

“There is a lightning winter on Thursday and Friday! Icy polar air thunders over Germany for 48 hours,” says meteorologist Dominik Jung from .

In the Alps and in the foothills of the Alps in particular, it can occasionally snow heavily until Saturday. In the congested areas of the low mountain ranges, a lot of snow can fall from the sky. Even in the lowlands, there can be a thin layer of snow for a short time.

Low pressure area “Ida” over the Baltic States and high* “Erich” over Ireland determine the weather. The cold front advances far into Germany and the moisture then accumulates again and again on the north-western sides of the mountains. It is therefore snowing particularly heavily in the Alps and there is also snow in the low mountain ranges.

Winter weather in Germany: This is where most of the snow comes down

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), up to 5 centimeters of fresh snow can be expected above around 400 meters on Thursday (January 20). In the low mountain ranges in the Ore Mountains, Harz, Bavarian Forest and Black Forest, 10 to 15 centimeters of fresh snow can fall, in the Alps up to 30 centimeters of snow and more. In addition, the DWD warns of hurricane gusts of up to 110 km/h on individual Alpine peaks.

The next winter pack is expected on Friday and, according to the DWD weather experts, with a “few snowflakes from Usedom to the Neisse”. Expect snowfall or snow showers in the east. East of the Elbe it loosens up and the sun can also be seen here. The maximum values are between 0 and 4 degrees, in the northwest and near the Rhine at 6 degrees. Sure, the snow melts faster here.

Amounts of fresh snow until Friday evening (January 21) according to the DWD

region Snow amounts until Friday evening (January 21) according to the DWD
Alps 20 to 30 centimeters
low mountain range 5 to 10 centimeters
Bavarian forest up to 20 centimeters
Ore Mountains up to 20 centimeters
Northern Black Forest up to 20 centimeters

Then the snow continues down south in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg. In Bavaria in particular, there may be more heavy snowfall on Saturday – especially in the traffic jams. Then it also snows in the Ore Mountains, then in the Bohemian Forest and on the edge of the Alps. According to the DWD, the snow line increases to 800 meters. The snow is increasingly turning to rain.

DWD: Here there is 50 centimeters of fresh snow in 25 hours

On the other hand, heavy snowfall sets in on the eastern Alps and lasts until Sunday morning. Another 20 to 40 centimeters of snow can be expected. In the backwaters of the Chiemgau and Berchtesgaden Alps, it increased by 50 centimeters in 24 hours.

And: The temperatures will continue to be a little milder: in the north-west half to 4 to 8 degrees, otherwise 1 to 5 degrees. Because the high* “Erich” brings mild sea air to Germany.

Winter 2021/2022 is not getting going

That is this 48-hour lightning winter. And, the meteorologist gives his conclusion on the weather so far: The winter has so far been 2.5 degrees warmer than the 30-year average.
