Particle Accelerator: What is it and what is it for?

The human being has always looked for the way in which science can help human development in every way. Since we were little we have learned to observe small particles from microscopes to know what the smallest elements of nature are like. The particle accelerator uses these tiny particles to concentrate them in electromagnetic fields and direct them at high speed to guide them on a common path.

These particle accelerators are a breakthrough in science that can spawn black holes, destroy entire cities, or grant extraordinary powers to anyone around them . It may sound like a science fiction movie, but the truth is that these particle accelerator capabilities are real and science is looking to control them.

What is the particle accelerator?

Broadly speaking, a particle accelerator is a huge device that uses electromagnetic fields to stimulate a series of particles, already charged with electricity, so that they collide with each other and reach extremely high speeds . The purpose of this reaction is to create new, more unstable particles that have a very short life.

In extremely safe environments for workers using this type of device, the particle accelerator mimics the action of a cosmic ray on the atmosphere, which ends up producing a beautiful and exotic particle shower.

Various types

We currently know of two types of particle accelerators that differ in several ways. On the one hand we find the linear accelerator and on the other the circular one.

The linear accelerator consists of a succession of tubes placed in a linear manner to which an electrical force is applied alternately . These particles approach a plate when they come into contact with an opposing electric field. The polarity is converted when they come into contact and the particles are rejected, so, thanks to the high speed it reaches, it travels to the next plate to carry out the process again.

As for the circular particle accelerator , the combination of electromagnetic fields with electric fields makes these particles achieve an unusual potential. The consequence is faster acceleration in much less time.

What are they for?

The most famous accelerator we know of is CERN, also known as the Big Bang machine . Studying the particles that are generated through this machine helps us to learn about scientific advances such as cancer treatments, obtain clean energy or the exploration of space.
