Peugeot concept-cars: a review of their future

Motor shows, such as Geneva, were the ideal setting to show the prototypes developed by the brands. These futuristic cardboard-like vehicles serve to give you an idea of the path that the firm will take, be it at the design or conceptual level. These fairs lose strength, but this does not mean that the departments in charge of concept cars disappear, minds that anticipate current needs and imagine a sustainable, connected and autonomous future. This species of automobile seers have existed for decades and have left their pieces and sketches for posterity, as tangible evidence of their musings. The first Peugeot prototype was presented in 1984: the Peugeot Quasar. Gérard Welter was able to express his creativity, with total freedom and without industrial limitations, to later transfer them to the 205 production.

This step is the most common but it is not always clearly reflected. To begin with, we must differentiate between concept cars and prototypes. The first is a showcase, a canvas or drawing on what could become. They are usually exaggeratedly futuristic and not very feasible models, with bodies made of noble materials and technologies that are hardly used at that time. The Peugeot 4002 would be a clear example. Prototypes, on the other hand, are more logical. They could be considered the previous step to the production model, with some licenses such as suicide doors (used in the MX-30), individual seats, mirrors that are too thin or tires of impossible sizes. The Peugeot e-Legend could be understood as such and the Peugeot 508 PEUGEOT Sport Engineered is one of the last pieces.

To create these vehicles, Peugeot designers set out to hunt trends in areas such as architecture, fashion or even human behavior. Citizens’ needs change and their tastes change, your job is to figure out where this evolution is heading. These images must fit into the mood board of the project, the basic conditions to start its development, and win an internal contest. Once the test is passed, a 3D model is built and CAO that will be adjusted. Once completed, it is ready to become a reality manufactured by leading modeling companies, scale models and exclusive parts .
