Millions of people loved Mamma Mia the Movie! And it looks like some of them are planning Mamma Mia! Travel to Greece. Here’s help creating your own Mamma Mia! The movie! Holidays in Greece.
Where is the Mamma Mia! Kalokairi Island? Sorry, although Kalokairi does not exist, most of the key scenes in the movie were shot in Skopelos and Skiathos. Any true Mamma Mia pilgrimage will include a stay in Skopelos.
Can I stay at Villa Donna?
Villa Donna, although it is like many other small hotels on the Greek island, does not exist, but you can stay where Pierce Brosnan, Meryl Streep and others stayed on the island. The Skopelos Village Hotel provided accommodation for Brosnan, Phyllida Lloyd, Meryl Streep and many others. You can view your comments in the guestbook as part of your stay. They also offer a complete wedding package with a stay in their Mamma Mia suite, although you may need to request this specifically.
Villa Pyrgos is located higher up on the same cliff where Villa Donna was filmed. Meryl Streep would rest there during breaks in filming at Villa Donna below. The runners, Thalpos Holidays, are happy to help guests who are fans of the movie locate the locations where various scenes were filmed.
Pierce Brosnan fans could especially enjoy a stay at Villa Metochi, where he lived on weekends during filming hours.
How do I get to Kalokairi… I mean, Skopelos?
Most travelers will go to Athens first, then fly to Skiathos. You cannot fly to Skopelos because there is no airport. You will have to go to Skiathos and then take a boat to Skopelos. The airport code for Skiathos is not what you would expect, it is JSI. In summer there are often charter flights from London and elsewhere directly to Skiathos.
You can also get to Skopelos by ferry. When looking up timetables, Skopelos and Skiathos can be written “Scopelos” and “Sciathos”.
What places Can I visit?
In Skopelos, you can visit Kastri beach, where much of the movie was shot, but the jetty and bar left with the movie crew. You will also see Glysteri Beach, below the Villa Donna location.
With a car, you can also visit the chapel where the exterior shots of the wedding scene were filmed.
In the Pelion area, the village of Damouchari in Greece is the place to visit. The crew members stayed at the Damouchari Hotel, and many of the residents were extras in the film. Here the dance was filmed on the jetty that ended with the women jumping into the water.
