Poor hydration implies risks for the athlete

We could say that the benefits of sport are incalculable, but the truth is that recent research has managed to quantify them. A healthy exercise routine improves sexual intercourse, helps fight anxiety, and to top it off, increases IQ and life expectancy. However, exercising our body while maintaining bad habits can cause the opposite effect and have dire consequences for health.

In this sense, it is vitally important to rehydrate the body before, during and after intense sports practice, since we can exude up to two liters of sweat per hour, and if we do not replenish the water reserves in time, there will be a decrease blood flow and a lack of muscle oxygenation, which, in addition to reducing our performance, can lead to complications such as disorientation, headaches, tachycardia, muscle cramps, exhaustion, vomiting and even fever.

In short, poor hydration puts our health at risk and also the achievement of our sporting goals, so we must always carry a bottle with us, either of water, if it is our daily “running” outing, or of Isotonic drink, if it is an intense and prolonged sporting activity. In the case of the latter, such as the triathlon events held at the VII Powerade Beyond Effort Day, nutritionist experts undoubtedly recommend the consumption of isotonic drinks, since, in addition to hydrating, they provide mineral salts and carbohydrates and increase the absorption of water by combining sodium and different types of sugars. In this way, the athlete is protected from the harmful effects of dehydration and experiences better physical and mental performance, as the latest research has shown.

INEF students, future sports professionals, know this well, and for that reason they did not hesitate to make stops to “refuel” while they battled in the impossible tests of resistance and ability of that day , organized by the Polytechnic University of Madrid with the collaboration of Powerade and TCCC Iberia. They couldn’t take risks; only the best classified would be eligible for a place in the next edition of Ironman 70.3.
