Profeco calls Mazda cars for review due to fuel pump failure

The Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office (Profeco) alerted the owners of certain Mazda vehicles that have a fault in the fuel pump impeller, which can lead to effects on “optimal engine performance by reducing fuel supply” .

The fault was reported voluntarily by Mazda, who stated that it will replace the low-pressure fuel pump of those affected with a modified one, free of charge.

“Mazda Motor de México, S. DE RL DE CV has decided to implement a call for review to 36,147 possibly affected units in order to carry out the verification of these and confirm if they present the aforementioned defect, in order, where appropriate, to implement the corresponding corrective action,” said Profeco through the alert.

What are the vehicles that have the problem?

  • CX-5, 2018 and 2019
  • CX-3, 2019
  • CX-9, 2018 and 2019
  • Mazda 6, 2018 and 2019
  • Mazda 3, 2018
  • MX-5, 2018 and 2019
  • Mazda 2, 2019 and 2020

It is worth mentioning that as of November 25, 2021, Mazda has not found a single reported case of said defect, nor any affectation caused to any consumer, as well as that it is correctable.

What problems does this error cause?

In its alert, Profeco points out that “it is possible that the fuel pump impeller may dry out and become deformed due to the low density of the material and therefore interfere with the general mechanics of the part , which could cause interference with the surrounding components of the fuel pump, where if it were the case, it could affect the optimal performance of the engine by reducing the fuel supply.

How do I know if I have any of the vehicles reported with a fault by Mazda?

The automaker indicated that the process that it will carry out will be notified by email to the owners of the corresponding vehicles from January 2022 in order to start the campaign from June 1, 2022 with an indefinite validity.

In addition, as part of the prevention process, it carries out an exhaustive review prior to the delivery of new units to consumers, in order to confirm that the corrective action is carried out before the vehicles are sold to the final customer.

It also inserted an alert in the after-sales service tracking system of all the brand’s authorized distributors so that, when the Vehicle Identification Numbers (NIV) are entered into said system, the alert of vehicles with the possible damage, initiating the review of the vehicle, informing the owner and, where appropriate, taking corrective action.

Customers within the can check with the VIN of their vehicle if it is involved in any service campaign.

Finally, Profeco and Mazda called on consumers who have made a change of ownership, to report through the indicated means, the contact information of the current owners.
