There are many ways to run a vehicle : oil, electricity, gas… However, we would never have imagined that a new way of moving engines would appear that began in our own garbage. This is precisely the objective of the Life Methamorphosis project, to obtain biomethane from organic waste. Here’s how, in five steps, our organic waste is turned into renewable gas.
This project is carried out at the Ecoparc 2 in Barcelona , an environmental facility dedicated to making full use of the waste from the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) through various treatments, such as the selection of recyclable materials, composting and methanization. .
The Life Metamorphosis project seeks to mitigate climate change, thanks to the use of biomethane from waste treatment plants as fuel for transportation. In addition to Seat, companies such as Aqualia, FCC, Naturgy, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area and the Institut Català d’Energia (ICAEN) participate.
Seat will participate in the Life Landfill Biofuel project , recently approved by the European Commission (EC), which aims to obtain renewable gas from municipal landfills. The objective is to achieve a more efficient management by obtaining biomethane from an indigenous and abundant energy source. The project will be developed together with other collaborating entities over the next four years and has a global budget of 4.6 million euros, of which the EC finances 55%.
Andrew Shepherd , head of SEAT’s renewable gas projects, pointed out that “this project will allow us to advance in the development and research of biomethane as a fuel”. “Our ultimate goal is to ensure zero CO2 emissions impact throughout the vehicle’s entire life cycle,” added Shepherd.
