Re: Verse is the first online Resident Evil with competitive multiplayer that I enjoy. Finally

It was not exactly within the public sector that had high hopes with Resident Evil Re: Verse , that free add-on with online competitive multiplayer for Resident Evil Village. And the reason was very simple: to date there has been no Resident Evil in that facet that was up to the task.

I’m not going to say now that Resident Evil Re: Verse is going to be the panacea of the genre in shooters where we play against other people, but it has shown me that I can have fun (finally) with a game of the saga in games in this way, forgetting once and for all what he suffered with the Umbrella Corps in 2016.

A pleasant surprise that works and has fun

Games with an online component in the Capcom saga we have seen a few, from the cooperative side of the Resident Evil Outbreak to the most recent Resident Evil Resistance with its asymmetric multiplayer as a gift in the Resident Evil 3 remake, replacing the addictive Mercenaries mode , having in this Resident Evil Re: Verse a game that goes straight to the point in very intense games .

With a counter of only five minutes, we have to score more points than the rest of the players (the games are for a maximum of six people) and for this we will have to kill, chain streaks or die little. The usual in competitive shooters , except for the fact that here when we die (where we have five points subtracted, by the way), we become a random biological weapon , depending on the number of vials we have obtained in human form. It is, without a doubt, its most striking point, causing a quite different type of tension.

Being an addition to Resident Evil Village that celebrates the 25th anniversary of the saga, it is logical that it rescue several of its most iconic figures for the occasion, with six human characters (Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield , Ada Wong, and Hunk) along with five bioweapons (Great Holomorph, Hunter Gamma, Jack Baker, Nemesis, and Super Tyrant). It is, after all, a more relaxed celebration of Resident Evil , but it works.

It is an agile and intuitive game that respects part of the interface with the crosshead of the last Resident Evil , although only for weapons, as there is no inventory as such to store herbs, for example. These are consumed by passing near one when they have damaged us. And the same for ammunition. Regarding the latter, of course, it must be said that each character has an infinite ammunition weapon (of less power) and a more powerful secondary but with limited bullets.

Part of the grace of Resident Evil Re: Verse lies in the enormous differences between each character , not only in relation to the weapons they wield (Ada has a crossbow, Chris an assault rifle, for example), but in their three abilities. unique (one of them passive), making each style of play completely different: Hunk has active camouflage, Jill with mines …

They generally suit the personality of each of these figures quite well for the saga, like that bet on Chris’s punch from his feat in Resident Evil 5 with a rock. In addition, it is appreciated that everyone has good mobility, sharing a dodging movement is very useful to avoid shots or get out of certain situations. There has been a major evolution regarding the control of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, finally.

Re: Seeing oneself and the coloring of biological weapons

Although it still does not reach the delight of other shooters where its gunplay shines, at least the experience is much more satisfactory than in other Resident Evils that bet solely and exclusively on the online mode, apart from being more fun for the pique that it supposes get the vials before the enemy and thus ensure a much more powerful transformation (after death), especially with Nemesis or Super Tyrant. This has enchanted me.

Like the heroes of the saga, this class of monsters also have their own abilities and differences in terms of health, speed, power and range of attack. Great Holomorph, the weakest and the only one that will come out if we don’t get any vial, it’s a kamikaze, but it can surprise us if we are in a populated area; while Nemesis is already scary in itself, especially because of the range of his rocket launcher. Sometimes it does not matter so much to die if we get a vial, because later we can roll it brown with one of those biological weapons.

Everything has its limits, in any case, since in the form of a BOW our life will be consumed until we die and reappear seconds later as a human again, but it is a “card” that brings a lot of color to the games in Resident Evil Re: Verse , being a give and take where the first death is not the one that “counts”, actually. And is that after killing someone, he will resurrect as a monster in the same place, which starts a hunt right after. Or not. According to our ability and / or confidence. In one of my last games with Claire Redfield, I actually took advantage of her modified generator to stun and slaughter a lot of BOWs like that.

I still do not have a favorite character, but I liked to see how each one has their own personality to propose different combat tactics, with some offering damage bonuses taking risks (having low health) and others betting on the movements of dodge to get other advantages. I only think the figure of six heroes or that there are only five monsters. At least, except surprise until its launch .

Another detail that I liked and that increases the intensity of the games, already intense due to what has been explained with the vials, is the fact that when the first minute of play is completed, special weapons will appear randomly, such as a powerful shotgun, a grenade launcher or the always-helpful “end” rocket launcher. All of these special weapons have a single shot, so they will break right after pulling the trigger, but they do make a difference with their use.

After the last disappointment with Resident Evil Resistance , of course I did not trust too much in this game mode wedged in the eighth official chapter of the main Capcom saga and as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, but the truth is that I really want to continue putting games in its beta and that it arrives, of course, that May 7 to face first against Lady Dimitrescu. What do you think of this beta on consoles and PC?
