Regina King to direct “Bitter Root,” a story of Harlem and monsters

Regina King is an extremely talented actress, who has proven herself superbly in both dramatic film roles, such as the Oscar for being the mother of Tish Rivers in Beale Street Blues and her excellent television association with showrunner Damon Lindelof in series of the stature of The leftovers and Watchmen (where he obtained an Emy). However, contrary to settling to dedicate himself solely to acting, King has made a brilliant start in the field of directing as well, through his debut film Una noche en Miami, which garnered 3 nominations for the last Oscars gala. The most recent news in this field for Regina King is her signing for the new project produced by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. Bitter Root (roughly translated as bitter poverty) is an adaptation of a graphic novel of the same name by Image Comics, in the one where a monster hunting family survives in the Harlem neighborhood of the 1920s. The production company behind the project is Legendary Entertainment, which recently conquered the box office with the Godzilla vs. Kong – Described as a cross between Let Me Out and Blade, Bitter Root’s story takes place in 1924 during the Harlem neighborhood revival. In it, a family of run-down monster hunters known as the Sangeryes face a dangerous evil that haunts New York City. The producer announced this story as a fantastic narrative that maintains a certain racial criticism, since this family has hunted and cured hundreds of infected who have become evil creatures, due to a supernatural being that feeds on their prejudices. The idea hidden and disguised at the level of fantasy is none other than that of the fight against racism, an evil that metaphorically in reality and literally in history turns people into monsters. For now, this story that mixes historical rebirth of the blues, literature and painting that lived in the Harlem of the black community with a story of horror, fantasy and monsters is in the pre-production phase. The comic has several issues. Will King start a saga of this story by turning it into a franchise or will the studio bet on a single film?
