'Retro City Rampage' and the hit label that is no such thing

We tend to believe that all games that get a certain visibility end up becoming successes, and projects like Brian Provinciano’s and his ‘Retro City Rampage’ tend to put our feet on the ground.

Six years of development, and a not exactly modest budget for an indie game, they are starting to generate income now after spending several months dancing on various platforms. Two things to note, it seems that Xbox 360 did not help too much and the Wii has not yet made a profit .

After going through PC, the next platform to which ‘Retro City Rampage’ arrived was PlayStation Network. That temporary exclusivity caused that when arriving at Xbox Live Arcade the sales were well below the expected, given the success of the online platform. The main problem here was believing that we were in the days of ‘Braid’, and the subject of indie exclusivities has changed radically.

Still without benefits but with the promise of bringing the game to WiiWare as well (Wii, and Wii U bounce, despite this becoming one of the most recommended platforms to play it), Provinciano jumped into the pool hoping to benefit from the movement.

The point is that until a minimum sales figure is reached, the developer who publishes on the WiiWare platform does not receive sales revenue. It will be upon reaching 5,000 copies sold when both the previous benefits and the successors will be delivered to the developer.

It’s funny how the joy you get from watching a game at a low price collides a lot with the pity you get from seeing the last triple A you just enjoyed selling for less than half. If a developer with little cushion for their possible failure enters the equation, the pity is even greater.

I hope that Vblank Entertainment ends up taking a slice of their game and soon they can bring us another gem to match.
