The case caused an outcry beyond Britain’s borders. A woman in London had been raped and murdered – by a police officer. It’s been a year.
London – The family of Sarah Everard, a Londoner who was kidnapped and murdered a year ago, thanked her for her support.
“The kindness that has been shown to us over the past year has been overwhelming, not only from family and friends but also from the wider public,” the British news agency PA quoted a statement on Thursday as saying.
“Unfortunately, Sarah is not the only woman to have lost her life to violent circumstances in recent times and we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to other families who are also grieving,” it said.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan praised Everard in a statement as a “dynamic, talented, intelligent young woman”. He will continue to do everything in his power “to ensure that violence against women and girls is treated with the utmost urgency by the police and by society as a whole,” Khan said.

Everard was arrested, abducted, raped and murdered on March 3, 2021 by a London Police officer on a pretext. The case sparked an outcry against violence against women in Britain. The focus was also on a misogynistic culture within the police force. Despite announcements by the British government, critics see no real change to improve safety for women. dpa
