Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head, South Carolina

The Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head, South Carolina, is home to the legendary Harbor Town Golf Links (home of the PGA TOUR’s Heritage) designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye’s Heron Point and the Ocean Course. The resort’s finest collection of golf courses, amenities, meeting facilities and accommodations make Sea Pines one of America’s most sought-after group and leisure destinations. Located on more than 5,000 acres of pristine shoreline at the southern tip of Hilton Head Island, Sea Pines is arguably the home of golf in the United States.

It is true that there are some who will not agree with that premise, but those who do must admit that there are few resorts that can compare in prestige or facilities at Sea Pines Resort.

The Sea Pines Resort is a vast haven seemingly away from the civilized world on the shores of the great Calibogue Sound, yet just a stone’s throw from all the amenities, activities, and benefits of Hilton Head. Three world-class golf courses, including the famous Harbor Town Golf Links, which long hosted the PGA Tour’s Heritage of Golf, make Sea Pines one of the most popular golf destinations in the United States. But that is not all. Add in an internationally acclaimed golf academy, a world-class tennis center with 23 clay courts that ranks as one of the best in the US, five miles of pristine Atlantic beaches offering everything from kayaking from sea to fishing and surfing.

Then there’s the enchanted 605-acre Forest Preserve with over 20 miles of bike and nature trails ideal for horseback riding, an equestrian center, 10 restaurants, two conference centers, and the world-famous Harbor Town Yacht Basin with his signature, sweet. Striped Harbor Town Lighthouse, when… Yes, you really have a resort that is a step or two above average.

But for our purposes, it is golf that will attract us to this unique and quite special resort. Three world-class championship courses, all world-renowned:

Harbor Town Golf Links is the jewel in Sea Pines’ crown: Bradley S. Klein, Architecture Editor at Golfweek Magazine, says, “It’s definitely one of the top ten courses in terms of design, because Pete Dye built all sorts of cool contours, shape, form and strategy in a dead level site that was really pretty boring to begin with. Well said. So, there it is again: Pete Dye. The man is responsible for some of the most important golf events in the world. There is no doubt that the man is a genius of vision and innovation.

Heron Point , Pete Dye’s latest contribution to Sea Pines, has been named by Golf Digest as one of America’s “50 Best Courses for Women”. “Anyone familiar with Pete Dye’s incredible work knows that his wife Alice is intimately involved in the design process,” says Cary Corbitt, Director of the Sports Division at Sea Pines Resort. “Forced carries, teeing, approach angles and difficulty are carefully evaluated to ensure that golfers have fun and fair play experiences.” Thus, the 7,103-yard layout snakes back and forth around what was once the old Sea Marsh course.

Now an innovative creation of long and short holes with all of Pete Dye’s trademarks present: “large trash bunkers, rail tie-downs, fairway mounds, and risk / reward greens that repel poorly executed approach shots.” It is woven in the middle. All Heron Point is a wild and wonderful place with a design that incorporates newly created ponds and centuries-old Live Oaks. It’s a design that takes full advantage, but never intrudes, in this area of supreme natural beauty.

The Ocean Course – Built and designed in 1962 by George Cobb, the Ocean Course was the first golf course on Hilton Head Island. Redesigned by Mark McCumber in 1995 with an emphasis on traditional and classic design principles, the course is a world of great natural beauty and has been awarded “Novice Friendly” certification by the National Association of Golf Course Owners. It also offers some of the most spectacular ocean views to be seen anywhere on Hilton Head Island.

The Hilton Head Island Golf Academy at The Sea Pines Resort: Finally, I would be remiss if I did not offer you a glimpse of this world-famous golf facility.

So with these three great courses in place, and the Hilton Head Island Golf Academy at The Sea Pines Resort, it’s no wonder Sea Pines Resort is one of the most popular golf spots in North America.
