Sexual fantasies: from normality to deviance

What sexual fantasies are considered normal and what sexual deviations? A team of researchers from the Montreal University Institute of Mental Health and the Philippe Pinel-Montreal Institute (Canada) has carried out a study that scientifically defines, for the first time in history, sexual deviation .

Despite the fact that many of the theories regarding sexual deviation integrate the concept of paraphilias such as ursusagalamatophilia or somnophilia, science does not specifically describe the reality of these types of fantasies. Most scientific articles refer to them as “unusual or anomalous sexual fantasies” . But what exactly are they?

“Our main goal was to specify the norms in sexual fantasies, an essential step in defining pathologies, and as we suspected, there are many more common fantasies than atypical fantasies ,” says Christian Joyal, lead author of the study.

For their research they had the participation of 1,517 adults (799 men and 718 women) with an average age of 30 years, who responded to a questionnaire about their sexual fantasies; They were also asked to describe their favorite fantasy in great detail.

The results revealed that the nature of sexual fantasies varies among the population but very few can be considered rare or unusual . In addition, men have more sexual fantasies and describe them in much more detail than women. On the other hand, between 30 and 60% of women think about topics related to the fantasy setting itself, such as being tied up or being forced to have sex. Unlike men, women clearly differentiate between fantasy and desire .

Regarding the realization of fantasies, most men would like their fantasies to come true -threesomes, orgies- (most women don’t) but they don’t fantasize about their partners like women, but about relationships. extramarital. In addition, men tend to imagine their partner with another person or with someone of the same sex.

“In general, these results allow us to shed light on certain social phenomena, such as the popularity of the book Fifty Shades of Gray among women. The subject is fascinating. We are currently conducting statistical analyzes with the same data to demonstrate the existence of homogeneous subgroups of individuals based on combinations of fantasies . For example, people who have introductory fantasies also often report dominance fantasies. These two themes are therefore not exclusive, quite the contrary. They seem to be associated with a higher level of satisfaction, ”explains Joyal.

The study, which has been published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine , determines relationships with an animal or with a child, for example , as strange fantasies; unusual fantasies are related to the “golden shower”, cross-dressing or sexual abuse of a person under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Finally, the typical or normal fantasies would be about oral sex, having relations with two women, in the case of men, or sex in a romantic place, in the case of women.
