Spain’s first match in preparation for the Euro Cup against Portugal featured a luxury guest. King Felipe VI was present in the box of the Wanda Metropolitano along with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez , the Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Costa , and the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa , to lead the joint candidacy of both countries ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
The Royal Spanish Federation and the Portuguese Federation, led by their presidents, Luis Rubiales and Fernando Soares Gomes da Silva , respectively, received all of them in the run-up to the duel to give visibility to an exciting project for both countries.
Curiously, the act takes place 100 years after the first duel between Spain and Portugal , which took place in 1921. The Spanish team, born in 1920 for the Antwerp Olympics, played its first two games on Spanish territory in 1921. The first was against Belgium and the second, in December of that same year, against Portugal.
The international match that measured Spain and the Portuguese team on December 18, 1921 was at the O’Donnell stadium in Madrid, where the national team, led by Manuel de Castro , beat Portugal 3-1.
One hundred years later, Spain and Portugal shake hands at the Wanda Metropolitano de Madrid before the Euro 2020 dispute, in a meeting preceded by the impulse that the highest institutional representatives of both countries will give to host the World Cup of the FIFA 2030.
