Storm depression "Ylenia" hits the Upper Palatinate: red alert! Schools close, trains are cancelled

A storm swept across Bavaria and caused school closures and storm damage. The Upper Palatinate is particularly hard hit. The DWD warns.

Regensburg – The storm “Ylenia” moves across Bavaria on Thursday. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of “hurricane-force gusts” in numerous regions. Speeds of up to 110 km/h are possible. The administrative district of Upper Palatinate* is particularly affected. There is a red alert in some districts, the highest warning level of the DWD. The result: lessons in some schools are canceled for safety reasons, and train traffic is severely restricted.

Storm low hits the Upper Palatinate: schools close, trains are canceled

The DWD’s severe weather warning applies primarily to the Czech border. The warning is valid until Thursday (February 17), 6 p.m. The districts of Schwandorf, Cham and Regen are affected. In Lower Bavaria, the hurricane gusts are moving through the districts of Freyung-Grafenau and Passau. The warning from the DWD states: “Among other things, widespread serious damage to buildings is possible. For example, trees can be uprooted and roof tiles, branches or objects can fall. Close all windows and doors! Secure items outdoors! In particular, keep your distance from buildings, trees, scaffolding and high-voltage power lines. Try to avoid staying outside!”

A trampoline blew onto a street in the Upper Palatinate. Trailers, traffic signs and garbage cans were also blown over by the storm. In Franconia, a train crashed into a fallen tree.

Some schools in Bavaria have already announced that they will cancel classes on Thursday. In the Upper Palatinate, it has so far affected the districts of Tirschenreuth, Neustadt ad Waldnaab, Amberg-Sulzbach, Schwandorf and the cities of Weiden and Amberg. There could still be school cancellations on Friday (February 18). “It is quite possible that classes will be canceled tomorrow if the weather conditions require it,” said Minister of Education Michael Piazolo (free voters) on Thursday.

Storm causes numerous train cancellations

Due to the storm warnings from the DWD, there are also impairments in Bavarian regional traffic (RE). Ten regional express lines in Franconia and the Upper Palatinate are affected, according to Deutsche Bahn Regio Bayern. Trains on these lines therefore still go to the next larger station and end there early.

Specifically, it is about the regional express trains (RE) 30, 31, 32, 35, 38 and 39 that operate in Central and Upper Franconia. With the RE 33, cross-border traffic to the Czech Cheb (Eger) is also affected. In addition, traffic on the RE 40, 41 and 47 lines, which run between Nuremberg* and the Upper Palatinate, will be discontinued. (tkip) *Merkur.de/bayern is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA

They say that in raising children the days are long and the years are short, and of course they are right. But perhaps it is especially in these days of school graduations and changes of stage, when we realize it the most.
