The Biomedical Neuroengineering Group of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (Alicante) has developed a brain-computer interface that allows a user to browse the Internet and handle computer applications using only thought .
The interface uses electroencephalographic (EEG) signals that are collected by more than fifty surface electrodes placed on the subject’s head . In this way, it allows you to find out what your intention is by detecting where you focus your eyes on a virtual keyboard that emits light signals. The information obtained can be used to control both Internet browsing and any computer application without lifting a single finger. “We have managed to search the Internet, move the mouse, correct movements, write a document, open a folder and create a file?” Explained Eduardo Fernández, researcher and professor at the UMH.
The results will be presented next April at one of the most important conferences in the world on Artificial Intelligence. The research is part of a project granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and called ‘Control of TeleRobotic Systems through Advanced Interfaces for Disabled People’. Hence, the next step of the project is to check if it works properly in people with different disabilities .
