He just climbed over a fence. But he had no interest in the royal family, the intruder said.
London – He penetrated the grounds of Buckingham Palace – a man in London has now received a suspended sentence.
In the early morning of May 10, 2021, the 44-year-old climbed over a fence that separates the palace’s riding stables (Royal Mews) from the road. When he climbed back, the police arrested him.
Officers found a 8-inch kitchen knife and cocaine in his backpack. In court, the man confessed to trespassing. For this he was sentenced on Tuesday to 24 weeks in prison, which was suspended for 12 months.
Queen Elizabeth II was not at the palace at the time of the incident. During the corona pandemic, she stayed almost entirely at Windsor Castle near London.
“You’re really lucky,” said Judge Roy Brown. “It was pure luck or fate that neither you nor others were seriously injured or even killed in the course of your escapades.” Despite the possible danger, the security forces acted very cautiously.
The mentally ill 44-year-old said he had traveled to London to be arrested. He neither knew that the fence belonged to Buckingham Palace nor had any interest in the royal family.
Time and again, people are breaking into royal residences without permission. On Christmas Day, security forces stopped a 19-year-old man with a crossbow in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Arguably the most famous intruder is Michael Fagan. He made his way into the Queen’s bedroom at Buckingham Palace on July 9, 1982. dpa
