Artificial intelligence

What is the haunting valley theory?

It is a hypothesis proposed in 1970 by the Japanese Masahiro Mori. According to this robotics expert, the more anthropomorphic traits and behaviors we give to robots, the greater our empathy with them. We tend to react better to machines that have eyes or mouths, even if they are not necessary elements to carry out their functions.

They create a computer that learns to play video games by itself

A team of scientists from one of the companies owned by Google, Deep Mind, has managed to create an algorithm capable of learning to play -and win- well-known classic games such as Pac-Man or “Space Invaders” (the little martians of all life) on the basis of insignificant information about the game in question.

An alternative to the Turing test

How does artificial intelligence compare to human? Currently - and for 65 years - the method used by scientists to evaluate and define whether artificial intelligence is capable of being compared with that of humans is the Turing test (in honor of the scientist Alan Turing). Now, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), Mark Riedl, has put on the table a new way to carry out this evaluation.

Video: Marvin Minsky, father of Artificial Intelligence, Frontiers of Knowledge award in ICT

One of the fathers of Artificial Intelligence, Marvin Minsky, has just won the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge award in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Thanks to his research in this field, the functions of computers, the ways of interacting with technology and the way of integrating them into our daily lives have been expanded.

They create a computer system that predicts the sales that a book will have

Researchers from the University of Granada have developed a new computer system that allows predicting what sales a book will have if it is published, very useful information for publishers, which could thus decide the print run of a work. This new tool, called PreTEL, is based on artificial neural networks, and also allows launch and run simulations from a statistical point of view, which can help decide whether a book is publishable or not.

A robot that learns to speak

Researchers at the University of Hertfordshire have developed a humanoid robot that is capable of learning to speak like a child between 6 and 14 months after engaging in a few minutes of "conversation" with humans. The work, echoed by the SINC agency, has been published this week in PLoS ONE magazine.

Can you calculate the age of a person from a photo?

The company Face.com has created an application for developers that includes facial recognition technology to guess the age of a person. The application obtains an interval, with a maximum age, a minimum age and an approximate age that it evaluates as most likely.

A machine that recognizes the mood

Who hasn't ever been frustrated having to talk to an answering machine? A new computer system is able to detect whether your interlocutor is bored or fed up, so that it can tailor its response to the person's mood.
