bees

Curiosities, science and nature of bees – Why are hive cells shaped like a hexagon?

We take advantage of the jump to the big screen of the famous Maya the Bee with 'La Abeja Maya, the movie' to delve into the world of these flower lovers. We spoke with the vice president of the Fundación Amigos de las Abejas, Jesús Manzano, who answered all our questions.

A robot with a bee brain

Researchers at the Freie Universität Berlin have developed a robot whose operation is inspired by the nervous system of the bee -which is relatively simple-, to perceive environmental stimuli and learn to react to them.

Caffeine activates the memory of bees

Nobody imagines Maya the bee having a cup of coffee to start working, but the truth is that caffeine helps bees to better remember where the flowers are. A team of scientists has studied this effect and publishes their results in the journal Science.

The bees' GPS

On the scale of a bee, the flowers of the field are widely separated from each other, and if you go from one to another without following a certain order, the energy expenditure is so great that it may not be compensated by the energy obtained from the collected nectar. However, bees are able to find the most efficient route to take advantage of their exits from the nest, according to a study published in the journal PLos Biology, the first to demonstrate the ability of bees to orient and memory under natural conditions.

Five typical summer allergies

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, there are five types of allergies to pay special attention to during the summer season: insects, chlorine, smoke, pollen, and fruits and vegetables. These are some tips to prevent its effects.

Bees inspire a computer program

Bio-inspired computing is a new field of science in which computer scientists and biologists collaborate to create applications that mimic nature. A team of scientists from the University of Extremadura has shown that the intelligent behavior of bees in hives can inspire the development of a computer program at the service of other research, especially in the field of DNA sequencing.

Bees also self-medicate

When a colony is infected by pathogenic fungi, the bees bring to the hive greater amounts of propolis, a mixture of wax and plant resins with antifungal properties. These are the results of a study published in the journal PLos ONE.

Bees can be pessimistic too

When people feel depressed and anxious they tend to see the glass as half full rather than half empty. Research published in the journal 'Current Biology' reveals that bees also have this pessimistic outlook when under stress.
