An investigation led by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has shown that two oncoproteins, Vav2 and Vav3, control part of the development of one of the most frequent skin cancers, squamous cell carcinoma. Breast cancer is the most common among western women. In our country, according to the AECC, about 22,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, especially in women between 45 and 65 years of age. 'Retirement' spreads between cells

At the end of their life, after having divided fifty or more times, our cells often rest and "retire." They enter a state known as senescence in which they are still active but cannot duplicate more, and which is associated with aging and cancer prevention. Now, research in which the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG) has participated reveals a new detail: by secreting a cocktail of factors, senescent cells can transmit their "retirement" state to other nearby cells.

Spanish therapy prevents lung cancer metastasis

A study led by the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), and in which researchers from the University of Granada, the Center for Genomics and Oncology Research and the Pompeu Fabra University have participated, has developed a new experimental therapy that reduces 90% the presence of foci of malignant melanoma metastasis in the lung. The results, tested in mice, show the therapeutic potential of inhibitors of the PARP enzyme, a key molecule in the repair of induced DNA damage.
