A team of scientists from University College London (UK) has created a bioelectric spray that can form a plaque of cardiac cells in an infarcted heart. The device fires with a power of 10,000 volts a jet of cardiac cells on the damaged and later scar tissue of the heart.
When an organism is developing, when a wound is closed or when tumors change places (metastasis) ... in all these cases, the cells involved must move collectively. Scientists from the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have discovered that these large cell movements occur in waves and "by pushing".
Why do we grow old? Many scientists try to unravel the entire succession of processes that begin in the cell and lead to the progressive deterioration of tissues and organs. An article published in Science has found very long-lived proteins that could explain part of the mystery.
Sodium bleach or hypochlorite, developed over 200 years ago, is now found in homes around the world and is one of the most widely used disinfectants. But how does it kill bacteria?
Researchers from the Higher Council for Scientific Research, CSIC, have determined which are the signals that make possible the formation of the central and peripheral nervous system during the embryonic period. The advance will allow the study of some serious disorders that can occur in the development of the human embryo.
Researchers from the Spanish Institute of Molecular and Cellular Plant Biology (IBMCP), together with scientists from the University of California, have elucidated the mechanism that regulates plant growth according to the time of day. Plants do not grow continuously throughout the day, but rather concentrate growth preferably at the end of the night and the beginning of the day, and then spend the rest of the time carrying out photosynthesis and redistributing the energy resources generated.
American scientists have identified for the first time a type of stem cells in the lung that is capable of self-regenerating lung structures such as bronchioles, the alveoli where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged, and blood vessels. The study, coordinated by Piero Anversa, director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, "could offer new treatments to people suffering from chronic lung diseases by repairing damaged areas of these organs."
Scientists in the UK have just created the world's most powerful light microscope. While traditional light microscopes allow objects down to one micrometer to be seen clearly, the new instrument lowers the limit to 50 nanometers (0.00000005 m).
Danni Büchner is invited to Sam Dylan's Halloween party. But the "Goodbye Germany" emigrant has no desire for many other party guests. And find clear words.
