80% of Europeans are concerned about the environmental impact of products

According to a recent survey, the majority of Europeans would be willing to change their consumption habits and buy more green products, but many feel that they lack information and distrust the green claims of manufacturers. More than 75% of respondents are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly products if they trust that they truly are (77%). However, only half of the citizens of the Union (55%) consider themselves informed about the environmental impact of the products they buy and use.

Women's clothing leaves less water footprint

On average, women dress daily in clothes made with a water consumption of up to 11,000 liters, 3,000 liters less than the amount of garments worn by an adolescent or an adult man. This has been calculated by researchers from the Water Observatory of the Botín Foundation and the Textile Technological Institute (aitex), of Alicante, with the collaboration of several clothing manufacturers.

A mathematical formula predicts the size of the species

The size of an organism determines many of its functions, such as metabolism and even birth and mortality. Furthermore, in a population not all individuals are the same size, but there is a whole gradation from the largest to the smallest individuals. Now, a team of scientists from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (Switzerland) has found what could be a universal equation that, based on the mean size, predicts the complete distribution of measurements for each of the living species on the planet.

Ants call for help even when they are larvae

Ants have a complex social system that requires communication between members of the colony. In addition to chemical signals, these animals also emit sounds to warn their companions of danger. Until now, these sounds had only been heard in adult ants, but a team of researchers from the Center for Ecology and Hydrology in Wallingford (United Kingdom), has just discovered that pupae, a state prior to the mature phase, also emit their own voices alarm.

Why are autumn tree leaves red in America and yellow in Europe?

According to Simcha Lev-Yadun, from the University of Haifa-Oranim (Israel), and Jamo Holopainen, from the University of Kuopio (Finland), the causes must be sought 35 million years ago. When the green color of chlorophyll decreases in the leaves, the yellow pigments that already exist in the plant become dominant in certain species and become visible. In red-leaved plants something different happens: as the green chlorophyll disappears, a new red pigment is synthesized, called anthocyanin.
