Water on the Moon and water on Earth are almost identical

Until today, the most accepted belief was that 4,500 million years ago a gigantic object collided with the Earth and, from the detached fragments, the Moon was born; and that the impact caused such heat that all the hydrogen evaporated and was lost in space, leaving both the Earth and its satellite dry. Later, the water returned to Earth in meteorites and to the Moon in comets.

The center of the Earth is 1,000 degrees hotter than previously thought

Not even the imaginative Jules Verne could guess that the temperature near the center of the Earth would be close to 6000 degrees Celsius, that is, 1000 degrees warmer than was estimated in a previous experiment carried out 20 years ago. The new measurement, released today in the prestigious journal Science, confirms geophysical models that indicate that the temperature difference between the solid core of the Earth and the mantle that surrounds it must be at least 1,500 ° C to explain why our planet has a magnetic field.

The world population will stop growing in 2050

Although intuitively it would be expected that in the future the number of inhabitants of our planet would continue to grow, according to the latest model, elaborated by researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid, the population of our planet will stabilize in the middle of this century, around of 2050.

What is the probability of dying from a meteorite impact?

A few hours ago, the fragments of a meteorite caused several injuries in central Russia, and these events coincide with the passage of the asteroid 2012DA14 through the Earth's orbit. Despite this, scientific studies reassure us, since, on average, the probability of dying due to the impact of an asteroid or a comet is 1 in 20,000.

An asteroid will almost skim the Earth on February 15

The small asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass almost touching the Earth on February 15, so close that it will pass within the ring of communications and meteorological satellites. However, NASA has ruled out any risk of a collision with our planet.

This is how the Huygens probe landed on Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn

On January 14, 2013, it was eight years since ESA's Huygens exploration probe landed on Titan, the largest of Saturn's satellites. It was the first landing of a body in the outer Solar System and now, thanks to the data sent by the probe, we have been able to recreate what these moments were like. We show them to you in a video.

Photographic tribute to the Earth

In 2010, Earth Day is celebrated for the 40th consecutive year. And to celebrate, NASA has released forty spectacular photos of the planet as seen from space. We have selected 10 of them that will blow your mind.
