A few hours ago, the fragments of a meteorite caused several injuries in central Russia , and these events coincide with the passage of the asteroid 2012DA14 through the Earth's orbit.
Despite this, scientific studies reassure us, since, on average, the probability of dying due to the impact of an asteroid or a comet is 1 in 20,000 .
According to a study published in the journal Nature , an American citizen has a high probability of dying due to a car or motorcycle accident, specifically 1 in 100, or of being killed, in which case the chances are 1 in 300.
According to the authors, from NASA and the Arizona Institute of Planetary Sciences, these data can be extrapolated to any citizen of the Western world. In the case of the inhabitants of Asian countries, the most probable causes of death are due to natural phenomena such as tornadoes and floods.
On the other hand, according to the study, the probability of dying due to the fall of a meteorite is much higher than that of dying in a fireworks accident, eating food contaminated by botulism or drinking water with levels of trichlorethylene higher than those allowed.
