A study published in the journal SLEEP reveals that healthy adults who habitually go to bed late are more likely to gain weight. Specifically, Andrea Spaeth and her colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania (USA) carried out an experiment in which they studied in the laboratory the response of a series of individuals between 22 and 45 years of age whose rest was limited to sleeping 4 in the morning to 8 in the morning for five nights in a row. And they found that they gained more weight when compared with those who slept an average of 10 hours the same number of days (from 10 at night to 8 in the morning).
After being up all night, men tend to overestimate the female "cues" they detect and think that women want to have sex with them even when they are not at all interested. On the contrary, women are not affected by having little rest when it comes to knowing if someone is trying to flirt with them. According to Jennifer Peszka, co-author of research published in the journal SLEEP, the data reveals that lack of sleep can have unexpected effects on perceptions related to relationships and sex.
Do you think that while you are studying sleeping can become a waste of time? Here are three recent scientific studies that show the importance of getting a good night's sleep during exam time.
Until now, scientists were unable to explain why insomnia and lack of sleep sometimes make us irritable. Recently, Pierre Maquet, from the University of...
Is it true that sleepwalkers forget everything they do? And that their movements are automatic? Does the habit of getting out of bed many nights - in more than 20% of cases, every night - have any repercussions? In a work published by the Lancet Neurology, researcher Antonio Zadra, from the University of Montreal (Canada), reveals that sleepwalkers do not always forget what happened while sleepwalking. Moreover, the author publishes that sleepwalking adults often remember what happened while walking in their dreams, including what they thought and what they felt during those night walks. Children and adolescents, however, having more immature brains, tend to suffer more episodes of amnesia when they are victims of this sleep disorder.
Are you one of those people who finds it especially difficult to get out of bed each morning when the alarm clock rings? Sleep medicine experts from the University of Flinders (Australia) have investigated the role of the biological clock in the tendency of night owls to go to bed late and the difficulty of getting up for work. The first findings indicate that when we suffer from the so-called delayed sleep phase syndrome, our circadian rhythm works slower than usual and allows us to stay awake and active for longer.
If you fall asleep during the day, it may be due to low levels of vitamin D, according to the findings of a study published in the 'Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine'. For the study, the scientists worked with 81 patients in sleep clinics who complained of sleep problems and nonspecific pain. Most were diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea.
