If you fall asleep during the day, it may be because your vitamin D levels are excessively low , according to the findings of a study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine . For the study, the scientists worked with 81 patients in sleep clinics who complained of sleep problems and nonspecific pain. Most of the subjects were diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. By measuring their vitamin D levels in a blood sample and determining how sleepy they were with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the researchers found a significant correlation between the two factors.
Furthermore, the correlation turned out to be more significant in certain breeds. Specifically, in black patients, higher levels of drowsiness associated with a lower level of this vitamin were detected . According to the authors, this relationship is logical because increased skin pigmentation is a risk factor for low vitamin D.
