Discovered the largest and most distant water reserve in the Universe

Two teams of astronomers led by scientists from the Californa Institute of Technology (Caltech) have discovered the largest and most distant reservoir of water ever detected in the Universe. The mass of water found would be equivalent to several billion times that of all that exists on Earth.

Why are clothes darker when wet?

When the rain wets our suit or we have just taken the laundry out of the washing machine, the fabric is darker than when it dries. This effect has to do with the refraction of light. Between the fibers of the tissues there are usually spaces, so that if a beam of light falls, they reflect it for the most part.

Why do fingertips wrinkle when immersed in water for a long time?

Until now we used to think that it was the effect of excess water absorption by the skin. However, Mark Changizi has just suggested that it is actually a body defense mechanism developed by our ancestors to better grip wet surfaces.

Stars that shoot water bullets

Located in the constellation of Perseus, at a distance of 750 light years, is the object L1448-MM, a young solar-type star in the process of formation. These early stages in the life of a star are characterized by the presence of winds or bipolar jets of molecular gas that move away from the protostar.

The Moon has a hundred times more water than previously thought

A study by scientists from the Carnegie Institution of Washington (USA) has determined that the interior of the Moon contains as much water as the upper mantle of the Earth, which is a hundred times higher than previously thought.

Noah's ark of ants

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, United States, have discovered that fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) create a kind of waterproof raft when there are floods to save the colony. It is a tortilla-shaped structure and almost half of the colony is submerged to keep the rest afloat, as explained in an article published today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS).

This is how the sap of the trees moves

Scientists from the Carlos III University have analyzed through 3D modeling the mechanisms that trees use to transport water in their interior, in order to try to learn the mechanisms they use to extract water from lands that are very dry or that are a both inhospitable.
