The 7 best nude beaches in Greece

Some travelers to Greece want to discover it all. And rightly so, as European countries are known for their scant beach dress code. Still, while many beaches allow topless bathers, true adult-only nude beaches should be sought out. Some require a hike to a secluded corner, while others feature a party scene for the birthday suit swimsuits. And while there are only a few dedicated “nude beaches” in Greece, most have dress-optional areas or times. If you don’t mind getting naked among ordinary people, just examine the scene to assess suitability. But for the real experience of being surrounded by nudists, you’ll need the scoop.

This red sand beach in Crete has some of the clearest and bluest waters in the world. It can be accessed in a 30 minute walk (depending on your fitness level) over a small mountain. Pack lightly and use sunscreen as you won’t have the need for clothes once you get there. Enjoy the rocks at the north end of the beach carved in Minoan and Egyptian shapes. Favored by summer nudists (easily recognized due to the depth of their tans), this nudist beach offers cool, cool water gushing from under the rocks. It can be accessed by a long walk from Loutro or Chora Sfakia or by water taxis that jump onto the beach. You don’t need to pack anything to do this hike though, as a quaint tavern perched on a rock offshore offers great coffee, local sausages, and souvlaki. Local goats huddle in the shade of caves located at the back of the beach. They are beautiful and friendly, but they can nibble on your shorts.

Despite the tavern’s anti-Buddhist owners with a view (and memorably excellent), nudists have a hard time resisting the smooth marble stone and shoreline of this stretch of beach. The scenic hour-long hike through the gorge is well worth it, but wear light clothing, especially in the heat of the day, to avoid sunburn. The unique seabed is ideal for snorkelling. And while this beach is remote, Marmara can quickly fill up with boat travelers during the summer.

One of the first nude beaches to become a popular haven, Paradise Beach now has a reputation as a “party beach.” The famous Cavo Paradiso, complete with a pool, swim-up bar, and restaurant, sits above the beach on a hill and draws a crowd of young people. However, expect to blend in with the clothed crowd, as Mykonos attracts visitors of all stripes looking for a lively atmosphere along the Aegean coast.

The pebble beach is set against a backdrop of reddish-red cliffs (evidence of past volcanic flows) and is accessible by a short walk from an archaeological area. As with most nude beaches in Greece, Red Beach attracts the same number of “textiles” (nudist slang for those who keep their outfits) as true nudists.
