With fuel prices rising around the world, efficient driving, always important, is now key when it comes to economizing on refuelling. But, first of all, surely you will often wonder why the price of gasoline increases. In the first place, and although it may be an economic issue, as in any capitalist market, this law of supply and demand is the reason that makes prices fluctuate. However, taxes are more important. 50% of the price that gasoline and diesel have at the gas station depends on taxes. In Spain, this 50% is affected by the Value Added Tax (VAT), the Tax on Hydrocarbons or Special Tax on Fuels and the Tax on Retail Sales of Certain Hydrocarbons (IVMDH). VAT is 21%, the Tax on Hydrocarbons increases the percentage that must be paid when the price of the raw material rises, and the IVMDH is set by the State and by the autonomous communities. Another significant factor is the level of oil reserves. Currently, the level is the lowest since 2020. And finally, the competition. We are faced with a lack of competition between the different oil companies and distributors in Spain, which is also reflected in this increase in the price of gasoline and diesel that we have been facing in recent weeks.
It is true that there are many gas stations that have already collected the 20% discount (15% from the Government and 5% -at least- for their part) on fuel in recent weeks, and, although it may not seem like it, it is a small relief for many drivers. Of course, don’t be alarmed if you don’t see it reflected on the gas station price sign, they will apply the discount once at the pump/box.
