The biological reason why the newborn is able to crawl up to its mother's breast

In Babies and more we have talked on several occasions about the famous “breast crawl”, that movement that looks like a crawl but that takes place after delivery, in which the baby looks for its mother’s breast and crawls to it to be able to feed.

For this to happen, the newborn is guided by smell, but in addition to that and according to a recent study, the biological reason why it is also capable of doing so is because the body temperature of mother and baby are “synchronized” to get the baby to find the breast to suckle .

As we discussed on previous occasions, as soon as it leaves the mother’s womb and practically without being able to see, if we place the newborn on its mother’s abdomen, it will crawl, guided by the smell, until it reaches the nipple and begins to suck. Is not it wonderful?

And although we knew that this was guided by smell, research found that there is another factor that helps the baby find the mother’s nipple more easily: a synchronized change in the body temperature of both after delivery.

According to this new study, after analyzing the temperature in key points of the mother’s body in the hours before delivery and of mother and baby in the first two days after birth, they found that the mother’s nipples increased their temperature to the baby to find them, while the temperature of the baby’s lips dropped to make them appear even warmer.

In short, this change in temperature that happens in both at the same time, has the function of helping the baby, when feeling his lips colder, to seek the warmth of his mother’s nipples in a natural and instinctive way to start suckling. .

For this reason, and for its other benefits, such as, it is extremely important that after childbirth, mother and baby are allowed the famous “sacred hour”, that first hour of life so special for their bond and that helps establish breastfeeding. and in which this wonderful and incredible moment takes place in which the baby is able to crawl up to its mother’s breast .

My baby is very distracted while breastfeeding: why it happens and how to get...

During the first weeks of life, breastfed babies often only want to be at their mother's breast. The shots are long (practically one with another), the baby's movements are slow and calm, and the exchange of glances between mother and child is constant.
