The Cannes Film Festival prepares its return

Next Thursday, the festival will announce its official selection, who will compete for the coveted Palme d’Or. The award ceremony is scheduled for July.

The Cannes Festival prepares its return in July and this Thursday it will announce the films in dispute for the Palme d’Or , relaunching with pomp the premieres of great directors, after the pandemic confined cinema to the small screen.

So far, three of the films in the official selection have been announced, including the latest works by American Wes Anderson and Dutchman Paul Verhoeven, and forecasts point to names like Nanni Moretti, Jane Campion and Joel Coen.

The jury will be chaired by American filmmaker Spike Lee, the first African-American to take on that role. The largest film competition in the world was canceled last year due to the health crisis and this edition will be held between July 6 and 17, two months later than the usual dates.

Among the major festivals, only the Venice Film Festival could be held after the start of the pandemic, under strict sanitary conditions.

In Cannes, although only half of the 40,000 daily attendees that the festival usually attracts are expected, no capacity limitation is foreseen in the rooms. Instead, a “sanitary pass” (proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test) will be required.

However, the organizers have yet to confirm the presence of stars and define the sanitary conditions for example on the red carpet and at traditional side parties.

And the set of measures will also depend on the evolution of epidemiological data in France, which in recent weeks began to gradually lift sanitary restrictions.

Anderson (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) will do so with “The French Chronicle,” shot in southwestern France and starring Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Timothée Chalamet and Adrien Brody. The rest of the films on the list to succeed South Korean Bong Joon-ho’s multi-award winning “Parasites” will be announced on Thursday during the traditional press conference on the Champs Elysees in Paris.

According to the bets, the Italian Nanni Moretti, Palme d’Or in 2001 for “The Son’s Room”, could return to Cannes with “Tre Piani”, as well as Joel Coen, the oldest of the Coen brothers, with “Macbeth”, in black and white, and starring Denzel Washington.

Jane Campion (“The Piano”), the only woman to have been awarded the highest award at Cannes, is also in the forecast, with “The power of the dog.”
