The circular antismartphone is here

It already caused a sensation during its presentation at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona last year, and now, after a redesign, the Runcible smartphone arrives improved through a crowdfunding campaign on the Indiegogo platform, where it is available from 399 dollars (about 354 euros).

The start-up Monhm, based in the Californian city of Berkeley (USA), is behind this smartphone that seems to mark the beginning of the post-smartphone era , since it is aimed especially at those people who from time to time they want to disconnect from everything and everyone. Of course, it is also characterized by that circular design, so innovative and groundbreaking in the mobile phone industry, with an aesthetic very similar to that of pocket watches.

As explained by the company, “Runcible is as powerful as a modern smartphone, but it is designed to be silent, to never interrupt you and to use all that power to improve your real life instead of constantly pulling you into the digital world ” . When you consider it appropriate, the device, the size of the palm of your hand, can do things typical of a smartphone, such as taking photos, browsing the Internet or getting directions, but the rest of the time it remains silent, without overwhelming you with notifications. waiting for your orders.

They still want to improve it more, but this version has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory. Its operating system is BuniOS, based on Android 5.1. Its connectivity is limited , since it is compatible with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but at the moment it will not be able to connect to the Internet using mobile data (although it is expected that in future stages of the project it will be possible). Also, its features include an analog clock, a compass and an integrated 7 megapixel camera. Its circular screen is 2.5 inches and has a resolution of 640 x 640 pixels.

The funds from this crowdfunding campaign will be used to perfect the Runcible manufacturing process “in a sustainable and responsible way,” they explain from Monhm. Thus, for example, the wooden roofs of the Lovelace model come from trees in Mendocino County (California) harvested in a sustainable way .

As for the price, it starts from the 399 dollars (about 354 euros) of the basic version, called Babbage and made with recycled plastic, to the 499 dollars (approximately 443 euros) of the Lovelace, made of wood. If the fundraising campaign is successful – something quite feasible, since in just a few days they have raised 52% of the $ 250,000 they need – they hope to be able to make the first deliveries of the Runcible starting next September .
