The coldest towns and cities in Spain and their record temperatures

With a hot summer like the one we are experiencing, it is never wrong to review those cities and places in Spain that are the protagonists in winter due to the cold. The coldest places in Spain are distributed by, according to the State Meteorological Agency , they are concentrated in the community of Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla León, which have historically recorded the lowest temperatures in history.

Torre de Cabdella (Lleida)

Although the general data of the coldest places in Spain are concentrated in the two Castiles, the record was registered in the province of Lleida. In 1956, specifically on February 2 of that year, Torre de Cabdella registered about -32 degrees below zero, something never seen in the Spanish temperature.

Calamocha

In the Aragonese town of Calamocha a whopping -30 degrees below zero were recorded in 1963. Calamocha is a town of about 5,000 inhabitants, located in the province of Teruel which, traditionally, is also usually one of the coldest capitals in Spain.

Since that year, no other locality has managed to surpass these two in registering temperatures that exceed 30 degrees below zero.

Molina de Aragon

Molina de Aragón is a town that is about 1,000 meters high in the province of Guadalajara. It is one of the coldest places in Spain where the temperature of mercury tends to drop considerably during autumn and winter, which are usually quite harsh.

It was in 1952 when the town registered its historical record of -28 degrees below zero. In Molina de Aragón it is very common for mercury to drop below 0 degrees several days a year.

Reinosa

Located in the Autonomous Community of Cantabria, Reinosa is the administrative and economic center of the Campoo-Los Valles region, located in the interior of the community, being one of the Cantabrian areas that receive the title of “city”.

With a population of less than 10,000 inhabitants, Reinosa registered a temperature of -24.5 degrees in 1971, marking the record for the area so far.

Albacete

Although it may seem that this city located in Castilla-La Mancha spends some really hot summers, the truth is that its average temperature during winter is also low. Albacete has another of the sub-zero temperature records that have been set in Spain.

In 1971 the town registered a temperature of -24 degrees Celsius , which placed it among one of the coldest places in Spain of all time.
