Given the generalization of Internet use, the new National Identity Document arises to adapt the personality accreditation mechanisms to the new reality and have an effective instrument thatmove to the digital worldthe samecertaintieswith which we operate every day in thephysical world. Specifically, it allows us to know without a doubt the identity of the person with whom we speak from a distance (digital identity), as well asdigitally sign electronic documentswith a legal validity equivalent to that provided by the handwritten signature.
At first glance, the electronic DNI is very similar to the traditional one. Its main novelty is the incorporation of asmall integrated circuit (chip)capable of safely storing information and processing it internally. In order to incorporate this chip, the document that identifies us has changed its traditional support (plasticized cardboard) for a plastic card, equipped with new and larger measures ofsecurity.
The private keys of each citizen are stored in the processor of the cryptographic card of their electronic DNI. To access them and the signature certificate, you must use apersonal access code (PIN), confidential and non-transferable, generated at the time of receiving the document.
If you have not yet renewed your old document, follow the instructions offered by the National Police Force on the official website of the DNI-e. And keep in mind that to use the new DNI it is necessary to have a personal computer and a smart card reader that complies with the ISO-7816 standard. Regarding the software, a series of cryptographic modules must be installed and can be downloaded here.
