The emotional gesture of an Argentine nurse who breastfed a baby whose mother was unwell after delivery

It is not the first time that we echo this type of news, but it does not stop us from being moved by the tenderness and generosity of the act: a nurse has breastfed a newborn whose mother was unwell after a home birth.

It has happened in Argentina and the image has gone viral when it is shared by various media in the country. We tell you the story.

The newborn had not received food for hours

The events took place last Monday in Sumampa, a city in the Argentine province of Santiago del Estero. There, a 22-year-old woman had just given birth at her home without assistance , after a pregnancy in which she had also not had any medical control.

Nurse Vanesa Suárez and another colleague had received the notice to come to help her, and when they got home they found the new mother in a delicate condition and with the placenta still inside. In addition, it was three hours since the birth had occurred and the baby had not yet eaten.

“The young mother had not had any control, that is why I contact the doctor and she tells me that for greater security we will transfer her and her baby to the Ojo de Agua hospital, so that all the controls are carried out, and avoid a infection or some complication “- Vanesa explained.

Before the transfer, the nurses tried unsuccessfully to get the baby to latch onto its mother’s breast , but in Vanesa’s words, the woman “was a bit sick” and was not able to breastfeed. Fearing that the newborn would suffer a drop in sugar, and in the absence of bottles and formula milk in the house, Vanesa offered to breastfeed, since she has a one-year-old son who is still breastfeeding.

And so it was that with the permission of the mother and the doctor who was treating them, the nurse began to breastfeed the baby:

“I took off my gown, because we were dressed as the protocol indicates in this time of pandemic and there I just gave him the breast and he began to suck very well, so it was a relief to be able to give him food” – the Argentine media collects, The Digital Gazette.

Vanesa affirms that her reaction was instinctive and with the sole purpose of helping the baby, but the photograph in which she is seen breastfeeding the newborn was immediately shared by the Argentine media, and has ended up going viral.

Later, the woman and her baby were transferred to the Hospital de Ojo de Agua Dr. Cleofas Mazza, where they underwent a medical check-up and were discharged. The doctors and nurses at this hospital highlighted Vanesa’s altruistic and noble gesture.

Breastfeeding in children older than one year: breastfeeding from 12 months is not spoiling

The first thing that caused me doubt when writing the post was the title. I have often heard the terms prolonged breastfeeding to refer to children older than 12 months who are still nursing. Or breastfeeding in older children. And yet, I get the impression that these terms refer to something that is not normal, as if breastfeeding had to have a short duration or children beyond the age of 2 years were considered too old to breastfeed.

Breast cancer during breastfeeding: a difficult diagnosis to face

My baby is very distracted while breastfeeding: why it happens and how to get...

During the first weeks of life, breastfed babies often only want to be at their mother's breast. The shots are long (practically one with another), the baby's movements are slow and calm, and the exchange of glances between mother and child is constant.

Mixed breastfeeding in twins: how to organize to feed two babies

The WHO recommends that babies under six months be exclusively breastfed. Mothers who have twins or fraternal twins are capable of producing milk for both of them, since we know that the greater the stimulation, the greater the production of milk; women in these cases can produce... up to 2 liters of milk a day!

Does your baby "tune in" to the nipple while nursing? Why does it do...

Does your baby play and touch the nipple that is free while he is sucking on the other one? This is a behavior popularly known as "tuning" (the child moves the nipple as if tuning a radio), and although it is completely normal and natural, it can be uncomfortable for some mothers.
