The first heat wave reached Germany on Thursday

Up to 37 degrees: The first heat wave of summer 2021 is just around the corner. The German Weather Service expects midsummer temperatures for several days. The nights are getting warm too.

Berlin (dpa) – The first heat wave is breaking through Germany earlier than last year. “It’s going to be full on Thursday. There will only be a few spots where 30 degrees are not reached, ”announced the meteorologist Jens Hoffmann from the German Weather Service (DWD) on Wednesday.

In many regions of Germany even 35 degrees and more are possible. Even on Friday and on the weekend it remains very hot, storms are possible. And tropical nights with more than 20 degrees are expected.

According to previous forecasts, the heat wave is expected to subside at the beginning of next week. In terms of calendar, summer starts on Monday (June 21st). Such temperatures in mid-June are not unusual, according to Hoffmann. “We’ve had that every now and then over the past few years.”

The first Corona summer last year was a little more indecisive. The rocking summer only really turned up later – at the end of July and beginning of August. Before that, it was at most regionally hot.

Several days in a row with over 30 degrees are considered to be a heat wave – and that across the board. However, there is no fixed definition. It is often particularly warm in the southwest and in Lusatia. Many people now expect early heat waves in the year – probably also because the extreme summers of 2019 and 2018 are remembered.

Emergency doctors advise in hot weather to drink a glass of water every hour throughout the day, even if you are not yet thirsty. “Don’t drink too much at once, because you can only absorb 500 to 800 ml of liquid per hour and use it sensibly,” said a message from the Asklepios clinics in Hamburg. The experts advise against cold drinks and alcohol.

Especially older, chronically ill or people in need of care, small children and pregnant women are at risk from the heat exposure, said Brandenburg Health Minister Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens).

Individual thunderstorms are possible in the west on Thursday. “Wherever it comes down, things can really get down to business with strong squalls, hail and rain,” the meteorologist explained.

On Friday the thunderstorms will spread a little in the west, at the same time the east will become Germany’s heat source. 37 degrees are announced by the DWD. In the rest of the country, too, the values remain above 30 degrees, but it is not quite as hot as the day before.

Also on Saturday it will be sweaty in the east at 37 degrees, in the northwest, however, the temperatures will drop below 30 degrees. The thunderstorms go on and on to the east and south of the republic.

The Lower Saxony Ministry of Agriculture appealed to animal owners to provide shade, cooling and sufficient water. In livestock farming, poultry in particular react sensitively to high outside temperatures, especially when there is high humidity. Pets such as dogs, guinea pigs or birds should also be protected from the blazing sun and always have enough fluids.

Our children's graduations mark the end of a stage and remind us how fast...

They say that in raising children the days are long and the years are short, and of course they are right. But perhaps it is especially in these days of school graduations and changes of stage, when we realize it the most.
