South America is a vast continent that encompasses a multitude of climates and biogeographic regions. We are talking about an area of 18,200,000 square kilometers that includes high mountain areas, mighty rivers, tropical jungles, temperate forests, volcanoes, glaciers … from the humid jungles of the Amazon to the remote Patagonian steppes, the enormous natural and scenic wealth is one one of the main attractions of this continent that is also heir to a wide cultural and artistic legacy.
The young Andes mountain range, the longest on earth (8,500 kilometers), crosses the continent from north to south, from Venezuela to Tierra del Fuego , between Argentina and Chile, passing through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. In it are the highest volcanoes on the planet, its highest point being Aconcagua (top image), in Argentina, a colossus of 6,923 meters, the highest peak on the planet located outside Asia.
In the Andean plateaus, the mountain range widens and the Andean plateau and puna are formed, areas at high altitude and in which other of the best-known landscapes of South America are located: Lake Titicaca and the Atacama desert.
The Amazon, the place occupied by the Amazon River basin, is the largest tropical forest in the world and one of the regions with the greatest diversity on the planet, and it is thought that it is home to a multitude of species of flora and fauna that have yet to be described. many of which could disappear before being discovered due to the main environmental problems that threaten the Amazon (deforestation, fires, habitat fragmentation …)
At the other extreme, to the south of the continent and almost at the end of the world, is Patagonia, which also includes the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, where glacial lakes, cold steppes and perpetual snows abound. The Perito Moreno glacier is one of its greatest attractions and one of the most impressive and admired landscapes in the world.
With such diversity and abundance of landscapes, it is very difficult to select the most beautiful on the continent, but in this photo gallery we wanted to bring you both some of the most representative images of South America, as well as other not so famous corners, but equally beautiful and captivating .
