In terms of sexuality, there is no one correct way to do things. Each person experiences their sexuality in different ways, and all of them are valid, as long as they do not involve their own harm or that of others, or are an impediment to the satisfactory development of other areas of existence. But, sometimes, sexuality becomes a complex terrain, which can be the result of complex problems, insecurities, misunderstandings … It can also happen that some biological factors are the origin of some sexual problems.
Sexual problems can be classified by theirorigin, depending on whether it is physiological, psychological and social. But any given problem also tends to involve other areas: a physiological problem, for example, will produce psychological effects, and these can lead to some social imbalances.
Physiological problems of a specifically sexual nature are quite rare. Only a small minority of people suffer from diseases or poor development of the genitalia or that part of the neurophysiology that governs sexual response. However, other diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity … can occasionally cause alterations in sexuality, causing, for example, a decrease in sexual desire, or even influence the quality of erections.
Many people experience sexual problems at some point in their lives that are by-products of other conditions or injuries. Butemotional or psychological problems are the most common cause of sexual problems, from bad sexual education, to wrong beliefs about sexuality, expectations that do not correspond to reality, complexes and insecurities. Fortunately, the vast majority of physiological sexual problems are resolved by medication or surgery. Generally, only those problems that involve damage to the nervous system defy therapy.
The sexologist and therapist Carlos Horrillo tells Muy Interesante which are the most frequent sexual problems in men and women. For the expert, many of these complications come from the fact that “we do not know how to practice sex, we ‘genitalize’ sexual relations and we focus them on intercourse”. Related to this, a bad sexual education causes people, from a very young age, to assume a certain idea of what sex is that does not correspond to reality. To avoid this, self-knowledge and trust with the sexual partner are often successful recipes for enjoying a healthy and satisfying sexuality.
