The most impressive underwater photographs of the year

The prestigious Ocean Art Underwater Photography Contest, organized by the Underwater Photography Guide, has announced the winners of a special Ocean Art Underwater Photography Contest under the banner “Safe Under the Sea” .

Despite the adversity that the whole planet is facing in these months, the “Safe Under the Sea” contest has been a way of bringing together people from all over the world to dust off old hard drives, share the beauty of our oceans and help the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in their fight to improve the health of the planet and its inhabitants.

The winning photos of the photo contest show incredible perspectives at a time when perspective is precisely the key to looking at the present and the future. Although it was a smaller competition, the selection of winning photos was no less fabulous than at other times.

All winning photos can be viewed in the Underwater Photography Guide.

The evaluation of the Ocean Art images was carried out a little differently for this very special occasion. The Underwater Photography Guide staff were honored to select the best images from a very competitive field.

The winning image conveys a special message of hope for the future of our planet’s unique biodiversity. Titled “Releasing Hope,” captured by accomplished photographer Edwar Herreno, it shows marine biologist Eduardo Espinosa releasing a tagged hammerhead shark cub for study in a unique shark nursery. It is efforts like this that will allow underwater photographers to continue producing stunning images for years to come. Other extraordinary winning images include raw and dramatic underwater moments with magnificent creatures, strange behaviors of marine life, astonishing portraits of miniature worlds, eerie shipwrecks, and many more photos that show the prevailing beauty of our underwater world.

The judges evaluated thousands of entries from 79 countries before selecting the final set of images as Ocean Art winners.

This contest was just a preview of the biggest underwater photography contest of the year: Ocean Art 2020 (to be announced in September 2020). As a result, the organization has donated 25% of the proceeds to WHO and CDC in their fight against COVID-19.
