When it comes to the weather in Germany, numerous heat thunderstorms have cooled off. The next heat wave is already in the starting blocks.
Frankfurt – Germany has already passed the first heat wave in summer 2021. In mid-June, temperatures were consistently above 30 degrees for several days. Occasionally, values of 35 degrees or more were even measured. Partly responsible for this was a weather phenomenon that experts call the “Sahara heat”. Very dry air penetrates into European regions and determines the weather situation. As a result, there were, among other things, strong summer thunderstorms, which also caused flooding in many places.
Germany faces a similar weather situation in the coming week, even if it may not be quite as extreme this time. Meteorologists report from deep “Xero”, which initially spreads over France and is part of an “Omega” weather situation.

Weather in Germany: The next heat wave is rolling in
An omegalage is “a stable high pressure situation in which a blocking high over Central Europe is established”, explain experts from the German Weather Service. In this case, the “Omega” location is mainly established over the Atlantic. These weather conditions are very stable, so low “Xero” does not move quickly over Germany, but initially remains over France for a few days.
For the weather in Germany, this means that increasingly warm air is flowing in from the south. According to the DWD, temperatures will rise again to up to 27 degrees on the Upper Rhine and the Danube on Saturday (June 26th, 2021). At the North Sea, the maximum temperature on Saturday is 20 degrees. On Sunday (June 27th, 2021) up to 30 degrees are expected and on Monday the thermometer will climb up to 33 degrees.
| Day | Maximum temperature (° C) |
|---|---|
| Saturday, June 26th, 2021 | 20 to 27 degrees |
| Sunday, June 27th, 2021 | 25 to 30 degrees |

Weather: air mass limit over Germany – more thunderstorms threaten
In the course of the next few days, the “Omega” situation will slowly move eastwards, creating an air mass limit over Germany. The warm air is pushed to the east and there is a risk of thunderstorms in Germany. According to the DWD, the individual, strong thunderstorms will increase from Sunday in particular directly on the Alps.
On Monday (June 28th, 2021) there will be partly heavy thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail, especially in the west and southwest of Germany. According to the latest weather forecasts, the ups and downs in summer 2021 will go a little further. (iwe / tu)
