The current benefits of smartphones or smart phones have turned these devices into a kind of extension of our body. We go with them everywhere; even to the bathroom and of course they sleep next to us, even if it’s on the bedside table and we rarely turn them off. What are the risks of sleeping with the mobile on?
According to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the problem comes from the screen of the devices (be it mobile, ebook, laptop or tablet). The luminescence of the screens reduces melatonin (the sleep regulating hormone) and also prolongs the time it takes us to fall asleep. It also delays and reduces REM sleep ; alertness increases at night -contrary to how it should be -… all this leads to us delaying the time of sleep and suffering from insomnia or sleep deficiencies due to this silent interruption of the body’s circadian rhythms .
As if this were not enough, the fact that seconds before we go to sleep and close our eyes, we have taken a look at our device, hyper-excites our brain, which is the opposite effect that we need before sleeping. For our brain to rest and sleep as well as possible, we should turn off our cell phones and never turn them on while we sleep since any vibration, sound or flash can wake us up and interrupt our sleep cycles.
Waking up often by a luminous notification on the mobile phone leads us to what has been called “technological insomnia” , a pathology that causes insomnia in its most initial phase but that, in some cases, can cause awakenings within dreams and become more accused.
