Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton on the first lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at turn six, winning the position from the Briton. The seven-time world champion, however, managed to maintain his first place using the outer limits of the track, entering the same position as before the corner.

Verstappen had won the inside and the apex of turn six getting the position. Hamilton used the outer limits of the curve to get back on track while maintaining his position. The Dutchman and Red Bull asked for the lap position, but the Briton did not believe he did anything abnormal, as did the FIA, which defended its maneuver by running out of space to return at that corner. The controversy is served after the events that took place in the Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia.
