"The situation is much worse than the mood": Lauterbach assumes that the number of deaths will increase

The RKI publishes data on the current corona situation in Germany every day. Karl Lauterbach warns against a “misjudgment” with the omicron variant.

Update from Friday, March 11th, 2022, 11:01 a.m .: Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) warned against underestimating the current situation in the corona pandemic. “The situation is objectively much worse than the mood,” said Lauterbach, referring to the significantly increasing number of cases. 200 to 250 people are currently dying of Corona every day. For him, the situation is “critical” because it can be assumed that the number of deaths will continue to rise in the coming weeks.

It is therefore wrong to now throw all protective and precautionary measures overboard, said the minister. Lauterbach called it a “misjudgment” to believe that the omicron variant only has milder courses. Unvaccinated people could die from it, and vaccinated people could also become seriously ill with the omicron variant and “develop long-term symptoms”. You have to react to that.

On March 11, 2022, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach commented on the current corona situation in Germany.

The new version of the Infection Protection Act therefore provides that further measures such as mask and test obligations can be taken in hotspots, said Lauterbach. Hotspots could well be large areas and not just individual cities or regions. Such protective regulations could then “affect an entire federal state”. The revision of the Infection Protection Act is necessary because according to the current legal situation, all protective measures would expire after March 19th.

The health authorities in Germany reported 252,836 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m.

The number of corona cases in Germany

Experts assume a high number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data. One reason is the limited capacity of health authorities, for example, and contacts are often only tracked to a limited extent. In addition, according to the ALM laboratory association, there is now a larger number of people whose infection is no longer confirmed by a PCR test – these infections are therefore not included in the official statistics.

According to the new information, 249 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 291 deaths. The RKI has counted 16,757,658 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.
