The smart bandage

tirita-inteligente Scientists at the Fraunhofer Research Institute in Germany have developed an innovative bandage that incorporates a pigment that changes from yellow to purple when there is an infection , indicating that it is time to change dressings. ? We have created a pigment that reacts to different pH values – a coefficient that indicates the degree of acidity or basicity – and we have integrated it into a bandage ,? explains Sabine Trupp, the inventor.

According to Trupp, healthy skin and healed wounds typically have a pH value below 5. “If it increases from acid to alkaline, it indicates that there are complications. And if it is between 6.5 and 8.5, is there an infection? Thanks to this intelligent material it will be possible to carry out the cures at the right time, without removing the bandage too early or too late, thus favoring the healing process.
