A team of Australian scientists has concluded that octopuses prefer high-definition television (HDTV) to standard television, according to The Journal of Experimental Biology .
The scientists captured 31 octopus of the species Octopus tetricus in Sydney Bay (Australia), showing them four videos in HDTV format several times, which is five times the number of pixels compared to the conventional format. And they observed that they reacted quite strongly. However, the animals did not show any response when the researchers used standard definition televisions to show them the same images, specifically of a crab, an octopus and a jar.
"Conventional television is not suited to the viewing characteristics of an octopus," concludes biologist Renata Pronk, a researcher at Macquarie University and the main author of the study, who assures that high definition images will be very useful to study how these animals "think". For now, one of the first conclusions of his research is that cephalopods have an "episodic" personality , in such a way that the same individual shows different reactions to the same images depending on the day.
