"Thelma and Louise": 30 years of the "almost" industry revolution

Thelma and Louise was at the time, a revolutionary film both for its history and direction by Ridley Scott and for the deeply feminist plot for the time. The female version and supported by the road movie of Two men and a destination celebrated its 30th anniversary last month. To celebrate, the cast has gathered to discuss all the usual sensations from when the film was released and what its appearance meant is the movie scene. Geena Davis, the protagonist of the film with Susan Sarandon , has spoken out with some criticism about the demand for a feminist cinema that never comes.

The actress recalled what was said at the time of the premiere: “There will be so many movies starring women, about women, photos of women on the road, whatever,” Davis said of the thematic swirl that the film would entail. “I’m thinking (…) let’s wait for all this magical change to happen. We are still waiting. It didn’t really happen. It seems like every five years or so, there is another movie starring women that is a huge success and people say: Well now certainly everything is going to change and it really hasn’t changed. “

The event where this anniversary celebration took place benefited the Los Angeles Food Bank , with a special screening at the Greek Theater in the City of Stars. This was followed by a press conference with questions moderated by Rebecca Keegan of The Hollywood Reporter . Both protagonists arrived with personalized t-shirts that said “She is my Thelma and I am her Louise” and vice versa. Keegan herself asked them what it was like to shoot the iconic recordings of both of them driving on desert roads. “It was a lot of fun, especially in the desert” Sarandon commented and later added what was part of a great learning experience: “What I learned is that you do your best performance when in reality you are just trying to drive a car and you are not thinking about anything. . He was driving pretty fast when we finished the movie. “

For her part, Davis wanted to point out the importance that the film had for many women of the time, a fact that led the actress to realize the little relevance that we give to women so that they appear in a movie feeling empowered by female characters: “It really made me think about what women are going to think about my character from now on and it led me to want to play roles where I could feel good about the choices the character makes. I turned down papers based on that thought for sure, ”Davis commented. The Thelma and Louise actresses do not find enough the obvious change that Hollywood is undergoing regarding the inclusion of more and more directors, screenwriters and actresses in recognized leading roles on the awards circuit.
