Novak Djokovic already has a successor at the Australian Open . After a tough battle in the final between Nadal and Medvedev, the man from Manacor took the cat with the water and writes his name, for the second time, in the list of winners of the first Grand Slam of the season. After four lost finals, the fifth time was the charm.
Djokovic is the great dominator and leads the record in the Open Era with a total of nine titles (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2021), followed by the Swiss Roger Federer with six (2004, 2006 , 2007, 2010, 2017 and 2018). Precisely against the Helvetian, in 2009, Rafa Nadal won what until now is the only title in Melbourne Park.
In fact, the Spaniard is the only Spanish tennis player who has managed to win the Australian Open and has written his name on the list of winners. His current coach, Carlos Moyá , reached the final in 1997, but lost to the American Pete Sampras, while Andrés Gimeno fell to the Australian Rod Laver in 1969, the first edition of the Open Era.
Nadal has been at the gates on several occasions, this Sunday was his sixth final and this time he did not fail. The balance is four losses and two wins, in 2009, in the first opportunity he had, and now in 2022. They have had to spend 13 years to see the Spanish raise the title to the sky of Melbourne again.
