According to farmer’s lore, the weather in March tells us what the weather will be like for the rest of the year. Already the first days of March should be groundbreaking. “The so-called farmer’s rules are partly based on long-term weather observations and therefore often have a core of truth,” writes the German Weather Service (DWD). However, according to the DWD, the rules should be treated with caution: the weather on a single day cannot predict the weather for several weeks. They are “not so reliable that they can be used to make official weather forecasts”, but sometimes an initial trend can be estimated.

Weather forecasts are complex and change frequently. The farmer’s rules, on the other hand, are based on the experiences of farmers who wanted to pass on their wisdom in this way. According to this, March should already give a glimpse into summer. Five rules should predict the summer weather. Weather extremes in March are more likely to indicate a bad summer.

This is how the weather will be in March 2022: farmer’s rules make a 40-day forecast
According to the peasant rules, March 10 is a special day, which is supposed to predict the weather for the next 40 days. March 10th is the day of the Forty Martyrs or the Forty Knights of San Sebaste. The corresponding peasant rules state:
- Rain sent by the forty martyrs will not end for forty days.
- On forty days cold wind, forty days are still windy.
- As the weather falls on forty knights, stays the same for forty days.

Weather in Germany: farmer’s rules make weather forecast
Peasant rules connect the current weather with Christian saints * and are characterized, among other things, by their regional dependency, reports 24garten.de. Since the rules were created by people in different places in Germany, they do not always apply to all parts of the country. Other days that have an important meaning according to the peasant rules:
- March 17th: Saint Gertrud – If Gertrude is sunny, the gardener will be happy.
- March 17: If Sankt Gertrud sees ice, it doesn’t get hot all year round.
- March 19: Saint Joseph – If it is clear on Joseph’s day, he will save us a lot of hardship and trouble.
