This is what the world's first smart and connected shin guards look like

Club Atlético Osasuna, Telefónica, and the startup HUMANoX, are the leading actors in this innovative project, which has led to the creation of the world’s first smart and connected shin guards. The objective of this innovation is to improve the sports performance and health of the more than 18,000 children who make up the quarry of the Navarrese club throughout the provincial community.

Osasuna, La Liga Santander club, has one of the best quarries in Spain thanks to its collaboration with all the clubs whose players aspire to one day join the sports discipline of CA Osasuna. The Navarran entity has 250 players in its Tajonar grassroots structure, and agreements with 137 clubs, which makes it have 18,000 male and female players under its influence.

The incorporation of IoT and Big Data solutions in the shin guards will allow coaches and players to know their sports performance in order to develop better game strategies on the field. Through data analytics, information such as the speed at which they shoot at goal, the way they run, or their heart rate is obtained in order to improve their way of playing and avoid possible injuries and more serious diseases.

HUMANoX Soccer is a digital platform based on data management linked to the use of its HX50 shin guards, made of carbon fiber, as light as it is resistant, and equipped with intelligent sensors that offer thousands of data from the player who uses them regarding their condition. of health or performance, during training sessions or in official matches and all in real time thanks to Telefónica’s mobile connectivity.

Analysis of data

The data, more than 50,000 per game, and unique for each player, is translated into 40 different variables that are monitored on the player’s or coaching staff’s mobile phone, tablet or computer, including metrics such as heart rate, fatigue, the force of the ball hit, the force of the impacts received, the speed, the calories consumed, or the movements on the field of play represented by a heat map and visualized through Google Earth in the application.

The application of specific technological solutions, such as big data or IoT, make it possible to link sports practice with the health care of children, maximizing the benefits of a sport such as football thanks to the improvements introduced by the HIMANoX solution, a at the same time that specific needs are solved such as knowing the physical state of the players and being able to choose whether or not to play according to the data provided by the shin guards in each game.

Rafael Contreras, executive president and co-founder of HUMANoX Soccer, boasts of “being the first in the world to convert a passive element such as soccer shin guards into not only a protection with more resistance than steel – as our shin guards are made of fiberglass. carbon-, but also in an active and connected device that, being integrated into the player’s kit, can be used both in training sessions and in official matches, increasing the protection of footballers as never before, by monitoring in real time and at all times their sporting performance and their state of health and emitting, thanks to our intelligent algorithms, different warning alerts to the coaching staff and to the player himself ”.
