Adventurer Jonas Deichmann took on an unbelievable 120 Ironman triathlons around the world, now he is actually back in Germany. There are only a few kilometers left to the destination.
Munich – almost there! Extreme athlete Jonas Deichmann crossed the border between Switzerland and Germany on Saturday after a 14-month trip around the world.
The 34-year-old set out over a year ago to circumnavigate the world by triathlon: 456 kilometers swimming, 5040 kilometers running and 21,600 kilometers cycling. Now he’s on the home stretch to Munich. His adventure should end on Odeonsplatz – exactly where it began more than a year ago.
Born in Stuttgart, he is looking forward to relaxing after his tour. The sports enthusiast has seldom been able to rest in recent months, also because he has become something of a media professional: In addition to sports, the 34-year-old uses his social media channels almost every day, answers questions from his online community and gives interviews. “I’m looking forward to waking up in the morning and not having to keep an appointment and just having more time,” said the Swabian of the German press agency.
After recovery – new challenge
The adventurer, who grew up in the Black Forest, wants to continue doing sport, but nothing extreme for the time being: “After 14 months of triathlon, I will also give my body 14 months of recovery.” The next big challenge is planned for 2023 – until then it will stay however “strictly secret”.
One thing is certain: Deichmann is certain that it will not be a swimming challenge. The extreme athlete swam 456 kilometers along the Adriatic coast, among other things – the record for the longest distance that anyone could cover without an escort boat. “Swimming was hell. That was by far the hardest and most uncomfortable discipline, ”said Deichmann looking back.
After being plagued by jellyfish stings and chafing from a wetsuit for 54 days in the water, the competitive athlete ended his swimming career after his arrival in Montenegro. Deichmann prefers to concentrate on other disciplines.
He is less motivated by the records than by the experiences he makes on his travels: “When I am old, I will not be rich. But rich in experiences, ”he joked. On Monday, what is possibly the greatest experience to date will come to an end on Odeonsplatz. dpa
